Il Sogno di Campaldino
Cross-media project
Il Sogno di Campaldino
is a cross-media project,
a triptych divided into three panels or 'moments':
installation, theatre and cinema
born around the homonymous text
by Giovanni Enrico Arrighini.
A dramaturgy that unites history to history,
great literature to life,
with an epic focus worthy of great works.
Alessandro Machìa

Il Sogno di Campaldino is a cross-media project, a triptych divided into three panels or 'moments': installation, theatre and film based on the homonymous text by Giovanni Enrico Arrighini. A dramaturgy that combines history with history, great literature with life, with an epic focus worthy of great works. In a criminal asylum in Washington DC, a patient on the last day of his internment falls asleep and dreams of meeting the poet Dante Alighieri in the days of the battle of Campaldino fought in 1289.
The first panel is a visual and sound installation work, a generative and interactive graphic motion of part of the dramaturgy, based on original drawings by the artist Michele Arrighini. The work is designed to be projected in a loop in the main squares of medieval Italian cities, primarily those linked to the poet's life, such as Florence, Arezzo, Ravenna, Rome, Verona, Venice, etc. A monolithic led wall in the center of the squares of these cities will generate some evocative images taken from 'Il Sogno di Campaldino' with subjective sound incursions of voices, sounds of the battle, Dante's verses and pieces of dialogue taken from the text that will be piped through the streets of the city, in a sort of Dante's polyphony
The second panel, scheduled for 2022, is the national premiere of the original dramaturgy, a performance that mixes the liquid language of new media with stage machinery, with a stylised theatrical form, enhanced by a powerful verse writing. A true kinetic-visual-aural score that, following the inspiration of the play, combines the modern with the classical, therefore the liquid image with stagecraft, evoking on stage the breadth of the exteriors of the Campaldino plain, the epic of the battle, both with the image and with the scenic action.
The final panel is the actual film, scheduled for 2023, a film with an epic rhythm, long sequence shots and a high artistic and literary value, not only because of the presence of two poets such as Dante Alighieri and Ezra Pound, but also because of the author's choice to bring great literature to the cinema in a radical way, not as a generic descriptive inspiration, but starting from the language and the use of verse in the dialogues between the characters.
The project is curated by Zerkalo Teatro under the guidance of director Alessandro Machìa.
