Scene 11
Close-up of a gallows with wooden poles arranged like a door, with three men hanging.
The one in the center is naked, the other two are wearing tunics that reach just above the knee.
The gallows is at the edge of the Campaldino plain where the battle was fought.

Black crows circle in the sky.
Overview of the remains of the battle in the early morning mist. The corpses of men and horses cover the ground.
The words of the crows can be heard off-screen, while images with close-ups and extreme close-ups of the fallen are scrolling by.

THE CROWS
From above the bodies
are white spots on the green grass.
We waited for them to take away the wounded.
We waited for them to strip the remains from their armour.
We waited for them to collect their weapons.
The youngest of us started
with the horse carcasses.
They are young and impatient.
The carts will come and take away the fallen.
But now the bodies are eyes and guts.
On the plain of Campaldino
the flags wave
with the red lily of Florence.

Some soldiers walk among the fallen, causing a few crows to peck at the bodies.
A line of men guarded by soldiers armed with halberds began to collect the bodies of the fallen, stripping them of their armour and loading them onto oxen-driven carts.
The carcasses of the horses are piled up and set on fire.
Black smoke rises to the sky.
A group of horsemen with flags in the wind bearing the red lily of Florence dominated the scene.
